Fees & Frequently Asked Questions
Counselling should be accessible when you need it
I believe that financial circumstances shouldn’t automatically prevent someone from getting the support they need.
I also recognise that people can arrive at counselling already carrying financial pressures, and I don’t want the cost of seeking help to create additional hardship.
For this reason, I offer a flexible affordability scale alongside my standard fee.
Flexible fees
Individual counselling
Standard fee: £75 per session
Sessions last approximately an hour.
Couples counselling
Standard fee: £75 per session
Sessions last approximately an hour.
An affordability scale
If the standard fee would be difficult for you to manage, please talk to me.
I offer a range of fees based on individual circumstances, with the aim of making counselling accessible to people who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
There is no need to justify your circumstances or provide detailed financial information.
We can simply have an honest conversation about what you can reasonably afford.
My aim is simple:
I don’t want someone to go without support because they can’t afford my standard fee.
At the same time, the affordability scale allows those who are able to pay the standard fee to help make lower-cost places available to others.
How does the affordability scale work?
There isn’t a complicated application process.
When you get in touch, we can discuss your circumstances and agree a fee that is manageable and sustainable.
You might be:
- experiencing a temporary period of financial difficulty
- dealing with redundancy or reduced income
- experiencing increased financial pressure because of changes in your circumstances
- supporting a family
- studying or working on a lower income
- facing unexpected costs
- experiencing financial hardship alongside the difficulties that have brought you to counselling
Whatever your circumstances, please don’t assume that counselling is automatically out of reach.
If cost is stopping you from getting in touch, talk to me.
We can explore what might be possible.
Why I offer flexible fees
I don’t believe that financial hardship should become another problem for someone who is already struggling.
Mental health difficulties can themselves affect employment, relationships, finances and everyday life.
Being unable to afford support shouldn’t mean someone has to wait until things become significantly worse.
Offering a flexible fee structure is one way I can try to make counselling more accessible while maintaining a sustainable professional practice.
Will I have to prove that I can’t afford the standard fee?
No.
I don’t want the process of asking for an affordable fee to become another source of stress or shame.
We’ll simply have an honest conversation about what feels manageable for you.
What if my financial circumstances change?
Please tell me.
Your circumstances can change in either direction.
The fee we agree can be reviewed if your financial situation changes significantly.
The aim is to find something that is fair, realistic and sustainable for both of us.
Can I still pay the standard fee if I can afford it?
Absolutely.
If you’re able to pay the standard fee, doing so helps support the availability of lower-cost sessions for people experiencing financial hardship.
In that sense, the affordability scale works as a shared model of accessibility.
What happens when I contact you?
You don’t need to explain your entire financial situation in an email.
Simply say that you’d like to discuss counselling and, if relevant, that affordability is a concern.
We’ll talk about what’s happening and what might be manageable.
You won’t be judged for asking.
Other frequently asked questions
What happens in the first session?
The first session gives us an opportunity to understand what has brought you to counselling, what you’re experiencing and what you’d like help with.
It’s also an opportunity for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.
You don’t need to have everything figured out beforehand.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s completely okay.
You don’t need to be experienced at counselling or comfortable talking about emotions.
You can simply start with:
“I don’t really know where to begin.”
We’ll take it from there.
How often would we meet?
Many people attend weekly, particularly when beginning counselling, but we’ll discuss what feels appropriate for you.
How many sessions will I need?
There isn’t a fixed answer.
Some people need a relatively short period of counselling to work through a particular difficulty. Others benefit from longer-term support.
We’ll regularly review how things are going.
Is counselling confidential?
Counselling is confidential within the professional and legal limits that apply to counselling practice.
I’ll explain confidentiality and its limits when we begin working together.
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes.
Online counselling can be useful if you live further away, have difficulty travelling or simply prefer working from home.
Do you provide couples counselling?
Yes.
Couples counselling provides a structured space for both partners to explore difficulties in their relationship.
You don’t have to be on the verge of separating to seek help.
Do you only work with men?
No.
Men’s mental health is a particular area of interest within my practice, but I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties.
I also provide couples counselling.
What if I’m unsure whether counselling is right for me?
That’s okay.
You can contact me simply to ask questions.
There is no obligation to arrange counselling.
Still worried about the cost?
Please don’t rule yourself out before we’ve spoken.
If you need help but aren’t sure you can afford it, get in touch.
We’ll see what might be possible.
